A lot of folks ask us if there are any side effects associated with taking probiotic supplements, and here is what we tell them:
“Side effects” is a medical term used in the labeling of some pharmaceutical products. Probiotics are not pharmaceutical drugs. They are dietary supplements that support good digestion and immune health.* But, similar to when you consume a new food, they may produce occasional gas or bloating when you first start taking them.* We recommend gradually increasing the amount each day until your body adjusts and you are satisfied with the results.
Remember: probiotics are the “good” or “friendly” bacteria that occur naturally in the gut, but factors such as age, diet, and even a change in routine may affect a healthy digestive balance and lessen our numbers of good bacteria.* Also, because at least 70% of our immune system is in the digestive tract, having a good balance of bacteria supports healthy immune function.*
