Prebiotic foods have been getting a lot of attention lately. In order to understand what makes them so special, it helps if we start with a quick definition of probiotics.
Your body is home to about 40 trillion bacterial cells, many of which are helpful and support good digestion and health. Probiotics are live microorganisms you can consume as part of your daily diet to add to your good bacteria stores and reap the health benefits; your daily probiotic supplement is a great example.
But guess what?
PREBIOTICS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT TO A HEALTHY, BALANCED GUT.
Prebiotics provide nourishment for the beneficial bacteria in your body. As they travel through your digestive system, they nourish all those good microbes along the way and help them grow and multiply. The result is more good bacteria in your gut, which promotes better digestion and a stronger immune system.
WHERE DO PREBIOTICS COME FROM?
Typically, prebiotics are found in foods that are high in fiber. Dietary fiber—including both soluble fiber and insoluble fiber—really just refers to the parts of plant foods that our bodies are unable to digest and absorb, which is why it is sometimes called “roughage.”
Because prebiotics are not digested, they remain in the digestive tract where they can do their job of feeding their probiotic partners.
TOP PREBIOTIC FOODS YOU SHOULD BE EATING
Adding more prebiotic foods to your diet is simpler than you might think, since many of the foods you already eat contain prebiotic fiber. Below is a list of the top prebiotic foods you may want to consider getting more of in your daily diet.
