In a recent paper focusing on women’s health policy in the United States, experts from the American College of Physicians had this to say:
“Women face unique challenges over the course of their lifespans regarding their physical health, interactions with the health care system, and roles in society. They make up more than half of the U.S. population and are likely to live longer than men—women aged 85 years or older outnumber their male counterparts nearly 2 to 1. Women use the health care system as patients, caregivers, and family representatives and can be particularly affected by costs, access issues, discriminatory policies, and lack of representation in biomedical and health outcomes research.”
The facts are these: Throughout history, women’s health issues have often taken a back seat to those of men. Their symptoms have been overlooked, dismissed and misdiagnosed by doctors, and women have been historically underrepresented in the medical community.
It was only in 1986 that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) began to encourage researchers to include women in health studies. It would be another five years before the Office on Women’s Health was established by the United States government, and another two years after that before the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993 was passed into law, which mandated the inclusion of women and minorities in clinical research.
And today, in 2019, we’re still a long way from where we need to be.
Renew Life believes in empowering women to demand better.
As a company founded by a woman and for women, we have a unique perspective on the challenges women face when it comes to feeling their best every day.
Back in 1997, when natural health and nutrition expert Brenda Watson started Renew Life, it was after years of personal struggle with chronic illness. She knew there had to be other women just like her who were plagued by digestive issues, fatigue, discomfort and other symptoms.
And just like her, many of those women had been told by doctors that their symptoms were completely normal or, even worse, all in their head.
After years of exhaustive research, Brenda came to realize the power of the human gut to promote vibrant health. The gut is home to trillions of bacteria, many of which are beneficial and work to maintain a balanced intestinal environment to promote both good digestive health and overall well-being. Some of these beneficial microorganisms can be harnessed and given to people; these are called probiotics.
Today, we know that at least 70% of the immune system can be found in the gut, and the friendly microbes there are tied to more than just optimal digestive function. New research links a balanced gut with reduced inflammation, heart health and a stronger immune response. Studies also associate our friendly gut microbes with weight management, healthy metabolism and improved mood.
Knowing all of this, it’s no wonder more health care practitioners today are encouraging patients to consume additional good bacteria, often in the form of a probiotic supplement.
